About me -

I have a DSc (Doctor of Science; in Intelligent Robotics, 2008) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, a MS in Computer Science (with emphasis on Intelligent Robotics, 2004) from the University of Southern Calfornia, USA and a BE in Computer Science and Engineering (2002) from the University of Madras, India.

My research objective is the statistical modeling, data fusion and machine learning of complex data from heterogeneous sources and diverse application domains. Towards my goal, I have a track record of making make fundamental scientific contributions while delivering value to sponsors and stakeholders. My research typically involves developing methods to solve specific problems and then rigorously evaluating these methods to understand their efficacy. The extent and rigor of evaluation, of the science I pursue, is a distinguishing aspect of my work. I have been enabled through my work with great collaborators, mentors and mentees.

My background in robotics pursued my interests in the context of developing spatial awareness in robots. I addressed problems relating to hierarchical representations of spatial data obtained from robot sensors (vision, image processing, range sensing) and the generation of increasingly abstract spatial constructs (e.g. a storage area or an office) from sensor data through machine learning.

Subsequent work, at the Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation (RTCMA), was at the intersection of mining and machine learning; I addressed problems of large-scale terrain modeling, sub-surface ore-body modeling and equipment health monitoring (predictive maintenance / prognostics). I regard my work in the areas of modeling and data fusion (in particular) with Gaussian processes as being most representative of me; this work was developed in the context of the first two problems but the approach is incredibly versatile and powerful. Work in prognostics involved gaining insights from client data, developing a platform to collect multi-sensor data during controlled fault generation in DC motors and developing methods to identify fault patterns in motors (e.g. feature extraction using statistical measures or wavelets and machine learning approaches like neural networks and support vector machines). I developed and managed this research thread while at the RTCMA.

At IBM Research (Australia and now India), I have further applied my skills in different domains including oil and gas (well log modeling), crop hail-damage prediction for insurance analytics and currently, HR / workforce analytics. I have also become familiar with some key issues of the geothermal energy sector and how my skills could enable improved productivity in this domain.

My work has been evidenced by patents and several publications (see below). I have been a best paper finalist at IEEE MFI (multi-sensor fusion and information integration) 2012 and also delivered a tutorial lecture; I am a Senior Member of the IEEE.
